Homeopathic medicine is based on the research and observation of the 18th century, German doctor, Samuel Hahnemann. He hypothesized, like Hippocrates, 2,000 years earlier, that what a drug can cause, it can cure, which is the way of similars. Indeed the word, 'Homeopathy', is Greek for 'similar suffering'.

Unhappy with the large doses of compound mixtures prescribed by conventional doctors in his time, which Hahnemann felt did more harm than good, he strove to reduce the toxic, side-effects of his remedies, by serial dilution and succussion, or shaking. A minimum dose of his remedies, all derived from natural substances, was then prescribed.

Hahnemann recognized, as did Plato and Hippocrates long before him, the importance of treating the person as a whole, rather than just their particular disease symptoms.. So he would select a remedy that matched the totality of a person's symptoms, reflecting their unique constitution.

"The cure of the part should not be attempted without treatment of the whole." Plato

"It is far more important to know what person the disease has than what disease the person has." Hippocrates

Over the past 250 years since Hahnemann's day, Homeopathy has been widely used throughout the world. Today, the World Health Organization estimates that Homeopathy is used by 500 million people worldwide.
At Suffolk Clinic, we offer a homeopathic medicine consultation service for adults.

In the initial consultation, we take time to listen carefully to you and the details of the symptoms that are troubling you, so that we can build a picture of them in relation to you. Then we prescribe a remedy whose symptom picture most closely matches you as a whole person. Follow up consultations are, initially, a month to six weeks apart.

Homeopathy FAQ

What is Homeopathy?

Homeopathic medicine is based on the research, observation and discovery of the 18th century, German doctor, Samuel Hahnemann. Like Hippocrates, 2,000 years earlier, he theorized there were two distinct ways of treating illness: by opposites and by similars; and, like Hippocrates, he favoured the way of similars.

Unhappy with the large doses of compound mixtures prescribed by doctors in his time, which Hahnemann felt did more harm than good, he strove to reduce the toxic, side-effects of his remedies by serial dilution and succussion, or shaking. A minimum dose of his remedies, all derived from natural substances, was then prescribed.

Is Homeopathy safe?

The high dilution of the remedies means they are non-toxic.

What happens during a first consultation?

The first consultation generally takes up to two hours. In order to find the right remedy for you as an individual, your homeopath will need to know all about you, including: what is troubling you, details about your symptoms, any other changes you have noticed in yourself since your symptoms began, and so on.. The aim of the consultation is to get an overview, not only of what is troubling you, but also of who you are as a person. Anything you say is treated in the strictest confidence.

What will the treatment be like?

Your homeopath will give you a homeopathic remedy, usually in pill form, together with instructions as to how to take it.

What about follow-up meetings?

Follow-up meetings, initially a month to six weeks apart, usually last forty-five minutes to an hour.

Can I take homeopathic medicine if I am already taking other medication?

Yes, you can take homeopathic medicine if you are already taking other medication, as it will not interfere with its action. Please note that you should never attempt to reduce your other medication without supervision from your doctor.

How long does a treatment take?

This depends very much on what is troubling you, as well as the other individual characteristics of your case.

What about seeing my GP?

It is important you maintain your relationship with your GP and continue to take any prescribed medication. He, or she, can give you specific advice on, diagnosis of, or treatment for particular conditions.
