The Secret Culprit Behind Your Neck Pain – And How to Beat It

Neck pain can sneak up on you. One day you’re fine, and the next, you’re cringing just trying to look over your shoulder or glance at your phone. Maybe it’s the constant stiffness or those annoying headaches that seem to linger. You start wondering: “What did I do wrong?” or “Is this just my life now?” Let me assure you – it doesn’t have to be.

After spending years helping people with neck pain, I can tell you this: understanding the root cause is the first step to freedom. Let’s dive into why you might be struggling and how you can finally take back control.

It’s Not Just Stress – It’s Your Lifestyle

One of the most common phrases I hear is: “It must be stress.” And while stress is a factor, what is often overlooked are everyday habits and lifestyle choices that fuel this pain.

Prolonged hours hunched over screens, whether at work or during leisure, take a toll on your neck. Your head alone weighs around 5kg – imagine holding a bowling ball at arm’s length for hours. That’s the strain your neck experiences when your posture is off.

Example: I recently treated a client named Mark, a 45-year-old accountant. He had suffered from persistent neck pain for years, attributing it solely to job stress. After examining his posture and discussing his daily routine, it became clear that his desk setup was the real villain. Simple tweaks to his chair height, monitor position, and daily reminders to get up and stretch made a massive difference.

Exercise tip: Incorporate chin tucks into your day. Sit tall, tuck your chin gently towards your neck as if making a double chin, and hold for 5 seconds. Repeat this 10 times, twice a day. This simple exercise strengthens key neck stabilisers and can help realign your posture.

The Headache-Neck Pain Connection

If your neck pain often comes with a headache, you’re not alone. Cervicogenic headaches (headaches originating from neck issues) are more common than you might think. The muscles and joints in your neck play a significant role in supporting your head and can push pain upwards when strained.

Example: Meet Sarah: a 32-year-old teacher who couldn’t get through a single lesson without reaching for painkillers. Her headaches were intense and debilitating, starting from her neck and wrapping around to her forehead. We identified that her posture while reading to her students and marking work contributed to overactive neck muscles and joint dysfunction.

Postural tip: Make sure your screen is at eye level, and if you’re reading or writing for long periods, take breaks every 30 minutes to stretch and reset your posture. A great stretch for tension relief is the Levator Scapulae stretch: Sit tall, tilt your head towards one shoulder, and turn your nose towards your armpit. Hold for 15 seconds and repeat on the other side.

Muscle Imbalances – The Quiet Offenders

Your neck isn’t working alone – it relies on a team of muscles that extend down your spine, through your shoulders, and into your back. When muscles like your upper traps or chest become overactive and tight, they can throw your entire system off balance, leaving your neck to pick up the slack.

Example: My client, James, is an avid cyclist. He had built up strong quads and calves but never realised his upper back and chest were causing a forward head posture that was putting unnecessary strain on his neck. By incorporating simple strengthening exercises for his upper back and stretching his chest, James not only saw his neck pain improve but also his overall cycling performance.

Exercise tip: Include scapular retractions in your routine. Stand or sit tall, squeeze your shoulder blades together as if trying to hold a pencil between them, and hold for 5 seconds. Repeat 10 times, twice a day. This exercise strengthens your mid-back and helps keep your shoulders and neck in proper alignment.

Don’t Settle for “It’s Just How It Is”

Living with neck pain isn’t something you should have to “put up with”. It’s easy to get used to the discomfort and accept it as normal, but pain is your body’s way of telling you that something needs to change. Whether altering your daily habits, improving your posture, or strengthening key muscles, small changes can lead to big results.
