Spinal Manipulations Treatment in Coventry

Spinal Manipulation is the straight-forward method of adjusting the bones of your body to maintain the correct alignment of your spine and to ensure that the body’s nerve supply works efficiently.

Through these subtle adjustments, spinal manipulations can relieve pain and discomfort, increase mobility and provide a route to better health. The key to the success of these adjustments is the speed, dexterity and accuracy with which they are performed.

Why is your spinal column so important?

Your spinal column is made up of 24 moveable vertebrae, the sacrum and the coccyx. This column also houses the spinal cord through which nerve information is transmitted to the rest of your body.

All organs and cells require nerve information to function correctly. Whilst the spinal column maintains correct alignment, nerve information is passed accurately. However, if any part of your spinal column becomes misaligned, then a nerve may become impinged, compressed or stretched, distorting the information that passes along it, which can lead to pain, discomfort, or restricted mobility.

A misalignment of the vertebrae or bones can occur for many reasons. These are some of the most common: incorrect lifting, car, or sporting accidents, childbirth, falls, stress and poor posture.

What to Expect from a Chiropractor Consultation

The first appointment will take about one and a half hours to complete. It covers a full case-history of current symptoms, including details of past, or current, illnesses, followed by a detailed, physical assessment. With information gained from the case history and physical assessment, an analysis of all symptoms will be made. A head-to-toe examination will follow and the necessary adjustments made to the relevant joints and bones of the body. Chiropractors have a very fine-tuned sense of touch, developed during their years of training, enabling them to feel for misalignments of the joints. If there are problems requiring medical attention, or an x-ray, then clients will be referred to their GP.

Generally, follow up treatments take about 30 minutes.

What Ongoing Help and Advice is Available to Ensure the Problem Does Not Recur?

Clients will receive postural advice after the treatment to help their body get the most benefit from the adjustments they have received, and to raise their awareness of simple things that they may do every day which may be making their symptoms worse. Clients may also be given some basic exercises, or stretches, to do if the chiropractor feels that would be beneficial.

How many sessions are needed?

The number of sessions needed varies considerably depending on: age, (people generally heal more slowly as they get older); the nature of the problem, (a simple backache will often clear more quickly than a sciatic problem); and how long the client has had the problem, (generally, yesterday’s injury will resolve faster than one of 20 years’ standing).

Most people need between three and six sessions, initially, at weekly intervals; then, gradually, more widely spread out. There will be re-evaluation based on progress at each treatment session. Once the problem has resolved, regular check-ups are advised to ensure that the spine and other joints are functioning well.

Does Spinal Manipulation hurt?

McTimoney Chiropractic seems extremely light and almost incapable of producing any effect. The key to the success of the adjustments is the speed, dexterity and accuracy with which they are performed. There is rarely any cavitation or ‘gapping’ of the joints. This is mostly indicated by an audible ‘pop’. Many clients confirm that McTimoney Chiropractic treatment is a comfortable and enjoyable therapy.

Why McTimoney Chiropractic?

The skeletal system of the body is assessed at each session. The pelvic bones are accurately realigned before the spine is adjusted on individual vertebrae. Attention is given to the knees and the feet, since making changes to the pelvis will inevitably change the transmission and distribution of load to the lower limbs. The bones of the neck are adjusted separately.
